Leaving the Lifts Behind with Weston Splitboards

by Margaret Hedderman

Our motto is “Gear for self-propelled adventures.” So who cares if you use one stick or two? No judgement here.

That’s why we’re bringing splitboarding back in a big way. Not only are we introducing an exciting new board line to Durango; we’re launching a series of events and programs for splitboarders to learn about backcountry travel and avalanche safety, meet new riding partners, and share the stoke.

Because we value community, education, and a responsibility to the land we love, we wanted to partner with a brand that shares the same ethos. Based in a tiny home that sometimes resides in Minturn, CO, Weston Backcountry offers educational events around the state and gives back to causes we know and love like Friends of CAIC and AIARE. On top of that, they make some of the best splitboards on the market.

Backcountry Experience in Durango carries the Weston Backwoods Men's Splitboard and the Weston Riva Women's Splitboard.

We have Weston’s award-winning men’s and women’s splitboards available for sale and to demo. Both the men’s Backwoods and women’s Riva feature Weston’s top of the line splitboard technology. Rather than cutting a solid board in half and modifying it, their boards are designed from the get-go as splits. Each individual ski is created with edge tape and sidewalls. This not only insures the overall quality and durability of the board, it allows it to perform as well on the uphill as the ride down. All Weston splitboards feature sintered high-density hole-less bases, a reinforced tip and tail, and a camber profile for skinning through deep pow.

The Weston Backwoods Splitboard has picked up numerous awards including Backcountry Magazine’s 2017-18 Editors’ Choice. With a lifted powder specific nose and camber underfoot, the Backwoods is a great all-around free ride split. On the women’s side, the Riva was created for hard-charging riders looking for an aggressive powder board that will perform equally as well on windswept crud.

This winter we’re partnering with Weston to offer local riders the opportunity to learn more about splitboarding and avalanche awareness. Through February, we’ll be hosting free introductory clinics with the Weston team. In Splitboard 101, we’ll cover the basics of choosing your first split as well as how to set it up and transition between touring and downhill travel. The clinic will also delve into basic trip planning and avalanche awareness. On December 15th, you can put your new knowledge to the test at our first ever Durango Splitboard Demo at Chapman Hill. Try out both the Weston Backwoods and Riva, as well as a huge selection of climbing skins and ski packs from Osprey.

On top of that, we’re offering an extensive lineup of backcountry ski and snowboard events this winter. See out full schedule below.

So if this is the year you leave the lifts and groomers behind, join us on our new adventure with Weston.
